Woolworth discovered German glass christmas ornaments when he visited that country in the late 1800's.  He brought them over to the United States and started selling them in his Woolworth stores.  After that thousands of stores started selling their own version of Christmas ornaments.  Since that time the selling of Christmas ornaments are second in sales to the gifts that are bought during the Christmas season.  It is a huge market, and has been since the introduction of ornaments in the United States.
